Purple Sprouting Broccoli Early Seeds

Purple Sprouting Broccoli Early Seeds

Purple Sprouting Broccoli Early is an early variety that produces rich purple spears of excellent quality. It can crop from November from early under cover sowings until May the following year, from late sowings. A great one for your Christmas dinner. Extremely hardy and a prolific grower reaching 90cm height and 60cm spread.

Purple Sprouting Broccoli is not readily available in the supermarkets, production costs are high as the spears have to be hand harvested and therefore it is expensive to buy.

By growing your own not only will it be cheaper but the spears will be nice & fresh and crisp not that springy bendy stem you get when spears has been left too long on the shelf.

Purple Sprouting Broccoli Early Vegetable Seed Information

Seed Quantity: Approx 300 seeds per pack.
Site:
Like other Brassicas the ground should be rich and firm but not recently manured. A sunny position is ideal.
When to Sow:
Indoors: March
Outdoors: April to June
How to Sow:
Sow indoors thinly into modules. Germination takes 7-14 days at 15-18°C. When seedlings reach 8cm they are ready to plant out. Water the day before moving and keep watered until established.
Sow outdoors thinly in a seed-bed 1cm deep in rows 10cm apart. They can also be sown under cover in pots, 2 seeds to a pot, then remove the weaker one. In mid-summer transplant to final growing position, place 60cm apart.
Outdoor transplanting should be 25mm deep in a drill with 60cm spacing. Direct sow 12mm deep in rows 15cm apart. Keep watered. Once germinated thin to 60cm.
You could sow a catch crop underneath like lettuce until the plants reach full size.
Care:
Keep watered in dry periods. Add lots of organic matter as a top-dressing as they are hungry plants and this also helps to retain moisture. The broccoli will reach 1m and will require staking, so it is best to support it with a short cane. Pigeons love the young shoots so cover with netting or tin foil on canes.
Harvest: November to May, they are a cut & come again veg that needs regular picking to prevent it going to seed.
